I work for a huge multinational corporation.  After many hours of mysterious
downtime playing Doom and Age of Empires corporate-wide, I just got this
email from the MIS Suits. [my comments in square brackets]:

<email>
At approximately 2:00pm this afternoon an electrical breaker in the Horsham
Data Center tripped and caused a number of servers to lose power.  The
servers that were affected are listed below.  All of these systems are
currently back on line and working properly.  We have contacted the
electrical vendor to evaluate the problem and provide a remediation plan.
In the meantime, steps have been taken to reduce the load on the circuit and
prevent a secondary issue.

The servers that were affected are...

HORITSRV01 [THE domain controller in North America]
HORWEB01    [THE IIS box that holds all our "mission critical" applications
& VSS]
HORLTS01    [I dunno]
FINWEB_02    [Where everyone in North America enters their timesheets]
HORSAS01    [THE SAS server.  mission critical.]
HORAV01        [Stupid corporate McAfee push-install server.  Good Riddance]
HORACTOL    [I dunno]
HORNWS01    [THE dns server for North America]
HORBB01        [I dunno]
HORSQL01    [Big Momma SQL Server]
HORSQL02    [Other Big Momma SQL Server]
HOROWA01    [Outlook Web Access for everyone (not just north america)]

If you continue to experience any issues with these servers, or any other
systems, please call the IT Helpdesk and we will assist you.

People, people, this is why high end IBM, Dell and Compaq servers come with
multiple power supplies.  Not just so if one of them fries itself you still
have two more in the box, but so you can PLUG THEM IN TO DIFFERENT CIRCUITS!

Make sure all your respective bosses and MIS clowns all see a copy of this.
DO NOT let this happen to you.  (or your 85 million records...or your
Corporate-Wide Visual SourceSafe)

What really happened was one of the suits tried to unplug his electric back
massager and yanked the wrong power cord.
