I have read that there will be SQL Server 2005 performance improvements in
SP2 for Windows 2003.  Does anyone know the specifics on what will be
improved?

Thanks

Hi

Just wondering where this was mentioned?

The upgrade from windows 2000 to windows 2003 is advantagous because of the
improvements in the underlying file hadling by the OS (I can't remember any
quoted percentages but it was a very significant one!), and from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/r2/whatsnewinr2.mspx it seems that
additional work may have been done in this area, so speculatively that could
be one reason amongst others!

Right, there may be general improvements to hardware interaction etc., but I
doubt applying Windows 2003 SP2 alone will have any *noticeable* performance
improvements specifically targeted to any version of SQL Server, never mind
a specific version...

Where did you read this?

Why would a Windows 2003 service pack address SQL Server performance?

Maybe you meant/misread SQL Server 2005 SP2?

You can read the blog here:

Performance improvements for SQL Server
Service Pack 2 provides performance improvement for SQL Server 2005 under
intensive workloads . These improvements are installed by default upon
Service Pack 2 installation

Well, unless you have an in with the windows and/or SQL teams, the best
you're going to get is speculation.  *MY* speculation remains that they
improved the way hardware/memory/CPU is utilized, and that this affects SQL
Server is not solely intentional.  In other words, DB2 or Oracle running on
the same server might benefit in the same or similar ways.

I will ask my contacts, but it is doubtful any non-NDA information will be
repeated here...

From the horse's mouth:

"the change is in winsock API and it is more perceivable on SQL workloads
running with > 8 CPUs + multiple
NICs. It will not be noticeable/measurable on other configurations."

Keep your eyes peeled because it may require more than just Windows Server
2003 Service Pack 2 on its own to have an impact anyway.
